In 2013, I performed in Johannesburg, South Africa for the first time. I was only there for a couple of days, but I had enough free time to allow for a the trip to the apartheid museum with some of my bandmates. Words cannot describe how deeply moving the experience was.

I came back to the New York where I was commissioned to compose new music for the Jazz Gallery and quickly began writing a lyrical song envisioning Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment during the apartheid as a caged, wild bird; the resulting song is entitled “Jaula” (Spanish for “cage”).
