Originally aired as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Digital Concerts. Cuban-born jazz pianist and composer Fabian Almazan and his ensemble join forces with a DSO String Quartet to perform Almazan’s composition Alcanza, a vibrant multi-movement suite that fuses jazz and contemporary classical chamber music. Almazan’s band recordings from Perth, Australia blend with DSO String Quartet recordings from The Cube in Detroit, MI in this celebration of making music together while being physically apart.

This was a spontaneous purchase decision, because I immediately liked the first notes I grasped while test listening. The tag "chamber folk" certainly is appropriate due to the excellent classically-inspired string and wind arrangements. You can think of it as folk rock or alternative country with chamber music elements as well. Anyway, great songwriting and orchestration throughout the entire album. Sven B. Schreiber (sbs)
